One summer day in 2014, Star Greenwood brought art supplies outside a beach house she and her partner had rented. She intended to practice water marbling, an ancient Japanese art technique.
She filled a wood tray with water and dripped bright acrylic paint onto the surface. She swirled the colors into intricate patterns to be transferred like magic onto silk scarves. One by one, beachgoers came to watch, Before long, a sizeable crowd had gathered. And, as Star says, the never went away. Within months, Mayu Silk Art was off and running, beginning with demonstrations at pop-up events, street festivals, arts and crafts shows, art centers and more.
In 2017, Insider Style posted a video about Mayu Silk Art to Facebook that received 22 Million views. By the end of the week, resulting in a "meteoric rise" for Mayu Silk Art. In the months that followed, their website visitors were up to 100,000% and their Facebook and Instagram following grew exponentially. The worldwide exposure proved pivotal, leading the couple to open a large warehouse studio and expand their services.
